DALLAS, TEXAS-Former NIU and former Bears receiver Sam Hurd has been sentenced in a Dallas court to 15 years in prison for his role in a drug ring. Last April Hurd pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

"I'm sorry and very remorseful for everything I did," said Hurd before the judge Wednesday. "I was addicted to marijuana. I've never sold or used cocaine."

The judge did not buy Hurd's appeal for leniency.

Hurd is a native of San Antonio, Texas.
