Chicago, Ill.- There is no shortage of competition at the Bears’ minicamp this week and the Coaching Staff is already making cuts. The Bears terminated Veteran Defensive Lineman Israel Idonije Thursday. Idonije played for Detroit last season after nine years with the Bears. In 149 career games, he has 273 tackles, 29 sacks, 40 tackles for losses, six forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, 36 special teams tackles and eight blocked kicks.

The quarterback competition narrows as well. The Bears waived quarterback Jerrod Johnson. Safety Sean Cattouse and tight end Fendi Onobun were also released Thursday. The Bears signed defensive end Jamil Merrell from Rutgers and linebacker Conor O’Neill from Wisconsin. The Bears’ active roster currently sits at 88 players. Marc Trestman announced that newly added quarterback Jimmy Clausen is expected to remain with the team. He also says competition is a healthy thing.

“We've got a lot of competition on this football team. I talk to our players all the time. If you had to pick our 53 right now and our 46 it would be very difficult to do it.  The competition is deep.” says Bears’ Coach Marc Trestman.
