Overall, Chrysler/Fiat continued its sales winning streak by selling nearly 195,000 vehicles in May, a 17% increase over May of 2013 and the best May for the automaker since the Great Recession.
And Belvidere built products helped lead the way, with Jeep having its best sales month ever. Jeep sales were up an astounding 58% in May, with Jeep Compass sales up 64% year-to-year. The Patriot logged its best May sales month ever.
The big surprise, however, may have been the Dodge Dart, which also set a sales record in May after months of lagging sales, up 16% overall. Industry analysts said Dart sales were being hurt by discounts on Dodge's discontinued compact Avenger, and that appeared to ring true in May with no competition from the Avenger.
Head of U.S. Sales Reid Bigland sees growing demand continuing for Jeep and Dodge products. "For the third consecutive month, our Jeep brand recorded its best sales month ever helping Chrysler Group to achieve its 50th-consecutive month of year-over-year sales gains. The Dodge Dart compact car had its best sales month ever, while our Ram pickup truck recorded another double-digit sales increase."
Warmer weather and five weekends of sales in May appeared to help push car sales overall, with the industry as a whole selling the most cars since February of 2007.
