FREEPORT – A Marijuana Facility in Stephenson County could bring big bucks to the City of Freeport. Out of state and local companies are looking to grow pot here in the Stateline.
Stephenson County Chairman William Hadley believes the Mill Race Industrial Park in Freeport could be the perfect place to grow medical marijuana.
"We are four lanes all the way to Springfield Rd., the state police headquarters is approximately less than 9 miles away, we meet all the state criteria’s of zoning issues," said Hadley.
He's been drumming up support from local mayors and even some surrounding counties who support putting it here. Although not everyone is convinced growing pot will be a good investment.
"No, I don’t think there is a lot of revenue there my understanding is that it all goes to the state so whether it is in Stephenson, Winnebago or Boone is not a big winner one way of the other as far as revenue. As far as a few jobs okay that may come," said Scott Christiansen, Winnebago County Chairman.
A final decision will be taken this fall by the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
