ROCKFORD - A fire on the city's southeast side leaves two families homeless and two dogs dead.

It happened around 9:30am at a duplex in the 2900 block of Edelweiss Road.  District Chief Tracy Renfro says firefighters arrived on scene with smoke and flames shooting out the front door.  Damage is limited mostly to the kitchens of both apartments.

One of the residents spoke to Eyewitness News.  She says her two dogs, a pair of Great Danes, died in the fire.

Firefighters estimate the duplex suffered about $60,000 in damage.  The cause is under investigation.
