Former Rockford Police Officer Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison

Daniel Cruz admitted to driving drunk during a crash which left a woman paralyzed.
BELVIDERE -- Former Rockford police officer Daniel Cruz has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for a DUI crash which injured four and left a woman paralyzed.

The 13-year police department veteran was off-duty on May 7, 2012 when struck a pickup truck and an SUV while trying to pass in a 'no passing' zone on Beloit Road.  He then attempted to walk away from the scene, but was stopped by a firefighter about 3/4's of a mile away.  A blood test showed his blood alcohol content to be .14, nearly twice the legal limit.

Cruz later pleaded guilty to two counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.  The maximum sentence was 12 years in prison.
