WTVO/WQRF - Illinois is number one and it's for a good reason.
The U.S. Green Building Council ranked the Land of Lincoln number in the sustainable building design movement. It recognized Illinois for having more than 29 million square feet worth of certified green buildings, or 2.29 square feet per resident.
"Illinois is proud to be the nation's green buildings leader" says Gov. Pat Quinn (D). "We are proof that a smaller environmental footprint can help us step toward energy independence."
Buildings that helped contribute to that top ranking include: The Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie, Lincoln Hall at U of I, and the Caterpillar Visitors Center.
Here's how the top ten rounds out:
5. New York
8. North Carolina
