Malfunctioning Transformer To Blame For Tuesday's Power Outage

ROCKFORD - The lights turned off for thousands of residents Tuesday afternoon.

ROCKFORD - The lights turned off for thousands of residents Tuesday afternoon.

ComEd says one of the four transformers at a substation near Boylan High School shut down, causing more than 17,000 residents in northwest Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park to lose their power.

It took crews about an hour to get everything fixed.  Spokesman Paul Callighan says most residents experienced outages that lasted about 20-25 minutes.

Callighan says it's still not clear why the transformer shut down in the first place and they're investigating it.
