More Political Figures are asking for Thompson’s Resignation

Pressure is building among people in the Stateline asking Winnebago County Republican Central Committee Chairman to step down.

UPDATE (VIDEO) – Jim Thompsons's racist remarks in a newsletter have been circulating widely locally and nationwide.

Now more people are asking for his resignation, but some believe Thompson could be forgiven if he would just step forward and apologized publicly.

Eyewitness News asked Thompson for an on-camera interview to respond to calls for his resignation, but he declined.

WINNEBAGO - Jim Thompson, Chairman of the Winnebago County Republican Party, is under fire for comparing President Barack Obama to a ‘zonkey.’

Quote from the WCRCC Bulletin:
“Now, if we can teach him to read a teleprompter, we could have two living creatures the media will fawn over that is part white, part black, and all a**”.

His remarks have been all over the internet and even on national news outlets. Now many are asking him to resign to his position in the Winnebago County Republican Central Committee.

John Guevara, board member of the Winnebago County Board, says this type of remarks make him angry, and he believes the office of the chairman has to be held to a higher standard when it comes to race issues. Guevara is also a member of the Winnebago County Republican Central Committee.

Christopher Sims, one of the co-funders of the Rockford Anti Racism Network, says remarks like these are not okay and they impact the way people view republicans in the Stateline. Moreover, it shows racism is still alive in this community.

Joe Terrell, Board Member of the Winnebago County Republican Party, does not agree with what Thompson said, but he believes people can learn from their mistakes, and we should move forward.
