DEKALB - A new digital manufacturing laboratory in Chicago will have major ripple effects across Northern Illinois.
Both Senators Dick Durbin (D) and Kirk Dillard (R) were joined by state and Chicago officials to celebrate the $70 million digital lab. It will be funded by the Defense Department. The goal is to develop technology to create more advanced manufacturing fields and improve military readiness.
The NIU College of Engineering will be one of the beneficiaries of the new digital lab. The school will receive $2.4 million to study 3-D printing in manufacturing. They'll be joined by two dozen other universities involved in the initiative.
"We are very happy to be engaged in national level research initiatives and address manufacturing for the sake of our country [and] being competitive in the world" says Dean Promod Vohra.
NIU was recently ranked on U.S. News and World report's top 50 engineering programs list.
