Update: Police Seek Public's Help in Finding Man Who Sped Away in Stolen Car

Update (9/18/14) Matthew Ton is now wanted in three counties (Winnebago, Carroll, and Beaverhead in Montana) after eluding police multiple times. He is facing multiple charges of possession of a stolen vehicle. Ton is believed to be in possession of a stolen 2007 white Pontiac G6, 4-door, with Montana license plates, 130119A.

Ton also stole a car from a woman after taking her purse at Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Rockford. Police thought they found him when they raided a Rockford home, but it turned out to be a bad tip. 

LOVES PARK -- Loves Park police are searching for a suspected shoplifter who was also driving a stolen vehicle to flee police.

Tuesday, just after noon, a Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy and Loves Park police responded to the Kohl's store on West Lane (rte 173) for a shoplifting call. The deputy chased the suspect, 20-year-old Matthew Ton, across the store's parking lot. Ton jumped into a 2003 green Saturn which had been reported stolen, nearly backed into a Loves Park police cruiser, then sped forward across the center ditch on N. 2nd. St. and then eastbound onto Minnis Dr.

The Saturn (IL license number 500395) had been reported stolen, along with another vehicle, from a garage on N. Chicago St. in Rockford. Burglars had gained access to the garage by stealing a purse, belonging to the victim, during a church service on August 10, in Rockford.

Ton is wanted on warrants for Aggravated Fleeing to Elude Police & for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call their local police, Crime Stoppers at (815) 963-7867, or Loves Park Police at (815) 654-5015.
