Possible New Tax on Sodas in Illinois

A bill recently introduced into the Illinois Senate could start charging a penny-per-ounce tax on sugar drinks sold in containers.

ROCKFORD- A possible tax on soda cans and bottles could soon be the law of the land.

If the bill it’s approved as it is written right now, a 12-onces soda can could cost up to 12 cents more, and a 2 litter bottle up to 67 cents more.

State Senator Dave Syverson (R-35) believes this is all about raising revenue, and this is not going to have any impact on individuals’ habits or behaviors.

However, a few residents believe this legislation might actually benefit their well being. If it becomes law it could go into effect on January 2015.
