Sportscore Development Could Boost Tourism in the Region

A sports facility is getting a huge facelift, and officials hope this could attract major sports teams to the area.

LOVES PARK - A $30 million construction project in Loves Park has high hopes for Stateline athletes.

Region leaders hope to make a difference in young people's lives by improving sport facilities as part of the Reclaiming First Initiative. The project will lead to 225 full-time jobs once it's done.

Governor Pat Quinn announced on August 1st that $2.5 million from the Parks and Recreational Facility Construction fund will go towards improvements taking place at Sportscore 2. The Indoor Sports Center will be expanded, and 6 new multi-purpose turfs will be installed.

One of the goals is to make the sport complex attractive enough to get major sports teams to practice in northern Illinois, according to Tim Dimke, Executive Director for the Rockford Park District.

The Wedgbury Stadium will be open by the fall, and construction for the rest of the project will begin in October. The anticipated opening date is March 2016.
