Park officials say this was a slower season than year's past.
"Due to the cooler than normal July this year, being the third coldest July on record, our attendance in some of our summer programming was down at the pools," said Zack McIntyre, Director at Magic Waters Waterpark and Aquatics at Rockford Park District.
The summer of 2014 tied for third coldest in Rockford history, reaching an average of 69 degrees for the month of July. The last time a summer was this cold was nearly twenty years ago, but many swimmers were still able to get in their pool time.
"We were really excited that Alpine Pool was actually able to stay open a week later than it did last season," says McIntyre. "All the other pools, including Sand Park and Harkins, this is the normal time of year that we close them down."
What's tough for swimmers is that the local pools are closed down just as the summer will heat up. Temperatures this weekend will be in the high 80's. But pool lovers will still have Magic Waters to get their late summer fix.
"We're hoping for a busy weekend and we're hoping for a busy weekend Labor Day weekend. It will be the last weekend of the year," said McIntyre.
