UPDATE (6/17/14): ISP have identified the victim who died as 74 year-old David Jones of Pecatonica.

Four others were taken to the hospital with what officials are calling "major injuries."  Those victims are:

  • William Young, 47, Owatonna, MN
  • Carol Silvestri, 64, Downers Grove
  • Bernard Klotz, 71, Ft. Myers, FL
  • Sara Jones, 71, Pecatonica (Airlifted)

ISP says all those involved were traveling south on I-39 near mile post 112.  Everyone but the semi driver, Jay Taylor, slowed down for construction, causing a chain reaction.  Taylor struck the Jones' car, forcing it into a ditch.  Taylor then hit Young's car into the median.   The semi continued to hit Silvestri's car, pushing it onto the left shoulder.  Taylor swerved into the west ditch where it struck Klotz.

Taylor was cited for failure to reduce speed.  The accident remains under investigation.
