Walgreens announced today that it will not move its corporate office overseas. The Deerfield, IL company had considered relocating abroad in order to lower its tax burden. This maneuver was considered following Walgreens' acquisition of British pharmacy chain, Alliance Boots, whose headquarters are located in Switzerland.
But, the company reached a decision to keep it's base of operations in the United States following pressure from American consumers and lawmakers. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) says America spoke, and Walgreens listened.
"There are customers across America and across Illinois who have been loyal to Walgreens their entire lives, and they believe Walgreens should be loyal to the United State," he said in a statement made Wednesday.
Durbin maintains that it is wrong for companies built in the United States to reap all of the benefits, and then move their corporate offices overseas.
