Drunk Driver Leads Cops on Chase Resulting in Deadly 3 Car Crash

UPDATE: Investigators have cleared the intersection, which is now open to traffic.
UPDATE:  Mulford Road from Guilford to Strathmore is now open as crash investigators have cleared the scene.

ROCKFORD - A traffic stop turns into a police chase and ends in a fatal crash.  The activity started at Dawn Avenue & E. State Street when a Winnebago County deputy pulled over a red & black pickup truck; the driver was suspected of drunk driving. 

After police made initial contact with the suspect, the suspect fled police leading them on a chase.  The driver scraped a car on Alpine Road, turned back onto E. State and managed to turn north onto N. Mulford Road.  The driver sped through a red light at Garrett Lane, in the process hitting a black sedan and in the aftermath hit a black SUV. 

Rockford Police confirm four people were taken to the hospital.  The person in the black sedan had to be extricated from the vehicle and later died.  Police say driver of the pickup truck is said to have non-life threatening injuries and is currently under a police detail. Police say they will continue to be on scene at the accident until 9:00 AM, Friday morning.
