ROCKFORD -- It's no secret that Rockford has a violent crime problem, but solutions have been hard to come by... until now. Winnebago County officially unveiled a new initiative, Thursday, and it's already boasting big numbers.

This team of nearly a dozen local, state and federal investigators formed in September is targeting the most serious offenders. Six gang members have been taken into custody, not to mention several other arrests for parole violations, and drug and gun crimes.

“The number of individuals causing havoc can be quite small but it  can be terrorizing for a community,” said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey.

“Our main objective we have to remember is, keep crime from occurring in the first place and when we fail to do that  is to arrest those responsible for committing that crime," said Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers.

And if that sounds like something you've heard before, it's because this isn't the first time our local agencies have used different initiatives to crack down on crime.  But Winnebago County Sate's Attorney Joe Bruscato says the violent crime task force isn't like all the others. He believes it's already shown it's a great success.

“This is not one approach replacing another this is linking multiple good approaches to achieve a good goal and that goal is creating public safety in Rockford and in Winnebago county,” said Bruscato.

The task force will hold quarterly meetings with the public to inform them on the progress being made.
