Man Taken Into Custody After Child Brings Gun To School

ELGIN - A 7 year-old brings a loaded gun to school and that leaves one man under arrest.

UPDATE: Investigators determined the student got the gun from 27 year-old Rashaad Byrd of Romeoville.  He has since been taken into custody.  Byrd is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, no FOID, and child endangerment.  He'll appear in bond court tomorrow morning.

ELGIN - Police confiscate a gun brought to a local elementary school by a 7 year-old student.

Officers were called to Harriet Gifford Elementary School around 10am.  They had received a tip a student had brought a gun to the school.  Staff advised officers the gun was inside a student's backpack, which was secured inside the school office.

The gun was a 9mm handgun and was loaded.

The student spoke with staff and officers.  A search of the school yielded no further weapons.  No charges have been filed at this time.
