SPRINGFIELD - A long-term plan to save money feeding state prisoners isn't working, at least for now.
The Dept. of Corrections wants more money to implement a new schedule to give prisoners two meals a day. They're asking a house committee for $40 million in supplemental funding.
An IDOC spokesman says two prisons have switched to brunch and dinner so far. They each need $200,000 more to cover the cost.
There are 25 prisons in the state. Eventually, the agency wants all prisons to fall under the two-meal a day plan.
