The Northwestern Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council was sorting and packing food boxes for the Salvation Army's annual food for the needy program today. What these volunteers did in one day of sorting, normally takes several weeks.
Organizers say it's important to give back, especially since the construction trade has been hit harder than most.
"it's been a rough few years for people. some have lost their homes and can't afford to put food on the table. this is about the basic needs of the community"
The Salvation Army estimates that 2,000 families will benefit from this weekend's food distribution.
