ROCKFORD - Stateline kids getting a financial boost toward a better future.

The Northwestern Illinois Building and Construction Trades Council presenting a $4,700 dollar check today to the United Way of Rock River Valley's "Success by 6 Initiative". The program helps encourage children to read at a young age.

Research shows getting kids reading-ready early, dramatically improves their chances of success.

"It's clear that if they know how to read and read at grade level by third or fourth grade, they have a much greater chance of graduating high school and that's important in a competitive job market."

The donation came from proceeds of the trades council's annual golf play day at Aldeen Golf Course.
