ROCKFORD- A tense situation unfolded as a wanted murderer barricaded himself inside a relative's apartment at 524 N. Court Street. Around 9:30 P.M. U.S. Marshals entered the home and arrested Anthony Jefferson, 43, taking him into custody. Hostage Negotiators and a SWAT Team spent hours trying to communicate with Jefferson. Finally, U.S. Marshals were able to enter the home, throw a flashbang, and arrest Jefferson who was hiding in the basement. No one was injured and no shots were fired.
U.S. Marshals, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies, Illinois State Police and Rockford Police Department all responded to the standoff lasting several hours.
Jefferson’s Stepmother was on-scene pleading with U.S. Marshals to allow her to speak with Jefferson and get him to come out of the house. Neighbors and relatives are happy the situation ended peacefully and without gun violence.
Anthony Jefferson, 43, is accused of killing a man and injuring another during a recent shooting in South Bend, Indiana. He faces murder and attempted murder charges. Jefferson is also charged with robbery and confinement after prosecutors say he forced a woman to withdraw money from an ATM. Jefferson is also accused of approaching a cashier at a 7-11 Store in South Bend, IN and throwing coffee in the cashier’s face, then demanding money and cigarettes.
ROCKFORD -- Police have blocked off an area in the 500 block of N. Court St. after U.S. Marshall's attempted to take a fugitive into custody. The wanted man has reportedly barricaded himself in an apartment where his relatives live.
According the a member of the Kingdom Authority Church, police are waiting until parents of the church's nearby daycare can collect their kids before making their next move.
The perimeter is set up on Palm Street from N. Court to Winnebago Streets.
