Tigers Headed To State

Byron's baseball team won the 2A Rock Island Super-Sectional Monday.
BYRON-Byron's baseball team is celebrating like it's 1995. That was the year Byron finished second at State. Now Byron is headed back to State thanks to a 3-2 ten inning win over Sherrard Monday at the 2A Rock Island Super-Sectional.

Jack Fleger drove in the winning run with an extra base hit down the leftfield line in the top of the tenth inning. That scored Tyler Nunez. Winning pitcher Nathan Peterson then kept Sherrard off the board in the bottom half of the inning to launch a Byron celebration on the mound. Peterson went the distance for the win.

"It was an unbelievable game," says Peterson. "Their pitcher dealed all game long. He was amazing. We've dreamed about this from the beginning of the season since we were kids and this is so special, and I'm so happy right now."

"Coming in I was 0-for-four on the day," says Fleeger. "It was great to get a big hit for my team. Especially to send us to state like this. Honestly the best feeling in the world by far."

Byron raised its record to 35-3. The Tigers will play in the 2A State Semifinal game Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Peoria's Dozer Park.
