Van Vleet Reacts To Historic Win

Fred Van Vleet comments on Wichita State's 30-0 start.
ROCKFORD-Each time Fred Van Vleet and Wichita State take the court it seems they’re making history. Tuesday night in Peoria, the Shockers became the first men’s Division One team to go 30-0 in a regular season.

The Shockers won by 20 points over Bradley, and they did it in their normal fashion, by playing team ball.  Four Shockers scored in double figures and a fifth just missed with nine points.  Van Vleet says team chemistry and a strong work ethic are what make the Shockers so strong.

"We just keep working. No matter how many games we’ve played or how much we’ve accomplished," says Van Vleet. "We still want to get back to work and do what we’ve been doing. We’ll never forget how we got here. Putting in that same work effort will propel us forward."

Van Vleet hit back-to-back three pointers in the second Tuesday night to help the Shockers pull away from Bradley. Van Vleet finished the game with 11 points, four assists and only one turnover in 32 minutes of action.
Van Vleet also says another factor in the Shockers unbeaten season is that they stay calm even when other teams make a run at them. A lot of that comes from Van Vleet’s poised at point guard.

"It’s just natural and experience and confidence," says Van Vleet. "It’s understanding the game, understanding what comes with it. Teams are going to make runs. We’re going to make runs. If you stay calm you’ll be able to survive better."

The Shockers have one more regular season game to play at home this Saturday against Missouri State. Van Vleet knows how big it would be if the Shockers could finish the regular season unbeaten.

"It’s history talking about college basketball.  The greatest teams, the greatest players of all time," says Van Vleet. "It’s an overall big achievement."

Ten other teams in NCAA history have gone 30-0, but those also included postseason wins in the Tournament.
