Byron State Championship Hopes Washed Away

The Byron Tigers played six innings against Pleasant Plains in the 2A State Championship Saturday. The game was called for rain and the Tigers lost 7-1.
Peoria, Ill.- The Byron Tigers hopes of winning a State Championship were washed away Saturday evening in Peoria. The Tigers game with Pleasant Plains was called due to rain in the sixth inning with the Tigers trailing 7-1 making Pleasant Plains the 2A Champs. The Tigers admit they hadn’t played well throughout the game. They committed five errors. But when the rain came, they had the bases loaded and a chance to climb back into it. Now they’ll never know if they could have completed a comeback.

"We felt like we were going to get a couple across and change the momentum a little bit. And obviously the game got called. And we were still confident but to find out that we're never going to know and never get the chance to make up for it, we're not ever going to get that back," says Nathan Peterson, Byron Senior.

"I was upset that we couldn't play on there. Bases loaded, Byron has had a good State Series down here. You never know what would have happened. Tough way to end. I can't argue with Mother Natur right now but I just wish. When you got ten seniors and you've got to look them in the eye and tell them you can't play on," says Ray Bielskis, Head Coach.

Byron will hold a welcome home celebration for the Tigers at the school Sunday at 5:00pm.
