Starfires Set For A New Season

The Rockford Starfires women's baseball team will play its season opener Saturday.
ROCKFORD-Beyer Stadium will spring back to life this weekend in Rockford. The Starfires women's hardball baseball team will play. The Starfires are the modern day version of the Rockford Peaches.

They'll play their season opener Saturday by hosting the Chicago Gems. This is the Starfires' third season, but their first in a league. They've been working hard getting ready for this opener with the Gems.

"We've played them several times. They've been established for quite a few years. We've never beat them before, come close. But we've been working hard since January, so these girls are dedicated to the game of baseball, and they're learning it as they go," says Starfires coach Greg Schwanke.

Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. Admission is free, but fans are asked to bring two canned goods to donate.
