Renteria New Cubs Manager

Padres bench coach Rick Renteria is the Cubs new manager.
CHICAGO-The Cubs have hired Padres bench coach Rick Renteria as their new manager. Renteria had been with the Padres for six seasons. He worked under current Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer when Hoyer was with the Padres.

Renteria has never managed in Major League Baseball. He has managed in the minors, and he managed Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. Renteria also played in MLB with the Pirates, Mariners and Marlins from 1986-1994. He was a utility player known for his versatility at playing multiple positions and for his pinch-hitting.

He becomes the first Hispanic manager for the Cubs since 1980. That's one of the keys to him landing the Cubs job. The Cubs wanted someone who could relate to their many Hispanic prospects such as Javier Baez, and Jorge Soler.

Renteria had hip surgery at the end of the season, and he is not able to travel to Chicago for a press conference.
