The economy makes many of us sick! It may actually be making many of us less healthy. Research shows, nearly half of us have postponed healthcare by not filling prescriptions or skipping immunizations because of the cost.

Cutting back on your health not only may be more expensive in the long run, it can lead to a negative impact on your health. Cutting pills in half, taking them less frequently or doing something different than what was prescribed may not be the answer.

A few tips… Use generics whenever possible. Generics work just as well as brand names medications but are much cheaper. If generics are not available, ask your physician or pharmacist about coupons which may be available from the manufacturer. Lastly, there are almost always alternatives. Ask your healthcare provider about medications that work similar, but are available at a lower cost. All you need to do is ask. I’m pharmacist Tom Carey for SwedishAmerican’s, A Health Dose.
