2017 Boone County Fair Begins

The massive fairgrounds feature food, rides, shows, games and more

BOONE COUNTY - The Boone County Fair lives up to its name as the largest county fair in Illinois. The sprawling fairgrounds are packed with food vendors, rides, shows and competitions, with something for everyone to do.

Gary Magee has been coming to the fair all the way from northern Wisconsin for the past 7 years. He says he always feels welcome.

"One of the things that draws us here is the Fair Superintendent, Wayne Weaver," said Magee. "Wayne's a good guy, he treats us right so we enjoy coming down to race here."

Magee has known the Weaver family for some time, which made for a very special moment when his horse won the Lucy Weaver Memorial Championship harness race.

"As races go, I keep telling my family and everybody else it's not over till it's over," said Magee.

For Belvidere North High School cheerleaders, the fair is an opportunity to fundraise for their team.

"It raises money so we can like have tumblings, and learn new tumbling skills," explained Cheerleader Kelsie Lensing.

The fair also has plenty of rides and games to play. Alyssa Martin fearlessly doing flips on a bungee attraction and getting quite the view of the grounds too.

"You can see like all the rides," she said. "You can see the ferris wheel and the tilt-a-whirl."

The highlight of the fair for me? Winning a hermit crab on live TV. His name is Eugene, and he's now officially part of the news team!
