ROCKFORD - Gunfire erupts three times across Rockford midday. Rockford Police are investigating one of the shootings as a homicide. Rockford Police confirm the woman shot in the Royal Avenue incident has died. Police say that woman was sitting in front of a home when someone shot her in the head around 4:30 p.m. That's on top of two other shooting on the city's east side and one on the Southeast side.
Dozens of officers respond to a scene in a West Rockford neighborhood. A woman shot and killed while sitting outside a royal avenue home.
"She was actually outside the home in the yard area when the shooting occurred," said Rockford Police Lieutenant Kurt Whisenand. It left those who witnessed the shooting emotional. Markers are visible on the street where shell casings fell to the ground. A beige car sits across the street, grazed by one of the bullets.
"We're interviewing neighbors and any potential witnesses and searching the area for suspect at this point," said Lt. Whisenand.
Just two hours earlier, around 2:30 p.m., a man drove himself to the hospital after being shot in his car. The rear window of the white SUV leaving behind a gaping hole. "It is unrelated to the shooting earlier on the east side," said Lt. Whisenand. The victim is expected to survive.
Around the same time, calls came in for shots fired on Kishwaukee and 17th Street. Police say a third shooting victim in an unrelated incident showed up to a local hospital for a gunshot wound. After investigations, police located the suspected gunman on Score Street, found a hang gun and was arrested. Devin Stevenson, 34, is facing charges of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. He is being held in the Winnebago County Jail.
