BELVIDERE (WTVO) -- A heated night of high school basketball involving two Rockford teams ended in a brawl Tuesday. Now the Illinois High School Association is getting involved.

Jefferson and East were playing each other at the Belvidere North 4A Regional. It was the tournament opener for both teams.

Jefferson and East are big rivals. This tight game added to the tension. It went down to the wire. Jefferson scored a basket as the final buzzer sounded to capture a 51-49 victory.

Seconds later while the players were shaking hands on the court tempers flared. Fans, adults and students, poured out of the stands onto the floor. There was shoving and punches were thrown. It's estimated that 40 to 50 people ran onto the floor.

Police were called in to restore order and to clear the gymnasium.

Jefferson advances to Friday's Regional Championship game at Belvidere North against Huntley. There could be some ramifications for the players and specatators who were involved which could carry over to that game.

The IHSA tells Eyewitness News that it has spoken with administrators from both schools and is currently gathering more information.
