LOVES PARK (WTVO) -- People who live along Park Ridge Road aren't used to the police presence that was on display Tuesday.

"Never seen anything so close," said Angela Larson.

A wild day saw police respond to an armed robbery in Capron, only to chase the suspects into Loves Park with speeds reaching 100 miles-per-hour.

"The responding deputy saw the suspect vehicle on (Route) 173 as it was coming into the area, attempted to stop the vehicle," said Loves Park Police Chief Jim Puckett. "The driver of the vehicle refused to stop."

After racing through Boone County and Machesney Park, the two men lost control of their vehicle entering a neighborhood, slamming into an SUV at Park Ridge Rd. and Doresella Rd.

"They were zooming down the street," says Kayla Johnson. "We were turning down the street and we saw they hit the car and the guy was running and they jumped the fence."

They fled on foot with police close behind. One suspect was arrested after he was captured by a K-9 unit two blocks away from the crash site. The other suspect jumped into the Rock River, but police pulled the man to safety after he nearly drowned. He was transported to Rockford Memorial Hospital for precautionary measures.

"We believe there may be a gun or some evidence in the river there," Puckett said as divers worked along the shoreline into the evening hours.

There is concern that the vehicle involved in the chase may have been stolen, but police are still investigating.

UPDATE:  Both suspects are in custody, one of whom jumped in the Rock River in an attempt to escape.
