Bizarre Twist in Beloit Baby Abduction Leads to Relative's Arrest

TOWN OF BELOIT, WI - Police are searching for a missing 4-day-old baby in Rock County.  Town of Beloit Police Chief Steve Kopp tells 'Eyewitness News' the mother of Kayden Powell reported him missing around 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning from her home.  They have not issued an Amber Alert because police have no suspects at this time.

The child was staying at his great grandmother's house as part of a family gathering.  Both parents of the child as well as some relatives have been questioned about what happened, and all are being cooperative according to police.

In a bizarre twist, one of the family's relatives has been arrested on an unrelated charge.  Kristin Rose Smith, who is reportedly from Denver, CO, left the home after an argument, apparently headed back to Colorado.  Family members called her on her cell phone when they realized the child was missing.  She then reportedly denied having the child, and was picked up by police in West Branch, IA along I-80 and arrested on a felony fraud warrant out of Texas.  Police tell 'Eyewitness News' however that the child was not with her, and she is not a suspect in the investigation.

The FBI has gotten involved, as well as the Wisconsin State Department of Justice.  Officers from the town and city of Beloit, as well as the Rock County Sheriff's Office, the FBI and the Wisconsin State Department of Justice are assisting with the investigation.

More updates as they become available.
