WTVO/WQRF -- Longtime Winnebago County Deputy Chief Bob Springer has secured the Democratic nomination for Winnebago County Sheriff.  Springer beat out four other candidates for the nomination, winning 42% of the vote.  Throughout the campaign, Springer stressed his close association with outgoing Sheriff Richard Meyers, who is retiring, but did not endorse any candidate to be his successor.  Springer will face Republican (Gary Caruana/Frank Pobjecky) in November.

Sheriff Richard Meyers retirement means this is the first time in 40 years that an incumbant is not running, and Republicans best chance to retake the seat in that period of time.

A combination of a large number of candidates -- seven in all -- and low voter turnout made it potentially anyone's race in both parties, and set up an intriguing matchup for the November general election.
