ROCKFORD (WTVO) -- He's a young boy that people will never forget.
"Cool happy little kid," says Michael Dirkins, the head cook at Latham Bar & Grill. "Gone for a reason, I have no idea."
Two days later, people continue to add to a makeshift memorial outside of the home of 8-year-old Thomas Kossow after police say he was stabbed to death by his mother in the family's driveway early Tuesday morning.
Jody Kossow, 39, appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday afternoon to face two first-degree murder charges. Prosecutors are still looking for any signs from the past that may have led to Thomas's death.
"We're pulling all past records," says Deputy Chief Dominic Iasparro of the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department. "I'm not aware of any significant incident that may have taken place there. Now whether or not there has been any type of police activity there going way back at this point. We're trying to pull any record they may have."
Kossow faces a maximum of 60 years in prison for each charge. She's being held on $2 million bond and is due in court October 10. \
In the meantime as the family prepares for Thomas's funeral, neighborhood businesses, like Latham Bar & Grill just down the street from the Kossow home, have been taking up donations for the family.
"Please donate," Dirksen said. "That's all I can say. I mean it's sad."
A visitation and funeral service will be held for Thomas on Friday at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Rockford. The visitation is set to begin at 3pm and the service at 5:15pm.
The family started a crowd sourcing campaign in the hopes of raise $8,000. As of Wednesday night, more than $5,300 had been raised. Many of the donations ranged from five dollars to over $100.
In addition, "The Thomas Kossow Memorial Fund" has been established at Associated Bank.
A community candlelight vigil at the home where the murder happened at 228 Woodrow in Winnebago County is set to take place on Thursday 5pm. A separate vigil will be held Thursday at 7pm at 6302 E. Riverside Blvd., the father, Michael Kossow, is expected in attendance.
A grieving community that only wishes Thomas was still alive tonight.
