Boone County Deputies Awarded State's Highest Honor

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Police award two Boone County Deputies with the state's highest honor.

Sheriff's Deputies David Mordt and Austin Schmitt were awarded the Medal of Honor.

The two men shot and killed 44-year-old Russell Donahue after he held family members at gun point at their residence in Poplar Grove. A Boone County Task Force cleared the officers of any wrongdoing.

Illinois State Police credit the men with saving several lives.
