Rockford- The Al Mart Food and Liquor Store is all boarded up after a man drives his vehicle into the front of the building.
Rockford resident Frank Lofton shot video of the scene. Lofton says “it’s not everyday that you see a car sticking out of a building so it kind of caught me by surprise.”
The driver of the car 43 year old Jerome Brown is charged with driving under the influence. It turns out Brown is a regular customer at the convenient store. But this crash left parts of the building demolished, shelves caved in, and a gaping hole in the ceiling.
Store manager Nasouh Awwad says “I’ve been here since 1998 and this has never happened you know. This is the first time it’s happened. I checked the camera and the driver, he didn’t push no brakes, he just come in thru.”
Awwad says police found open beer bottles in Brown’s car. The damage from the crash left fire officials with no choice but to shut the store down on Sunday. Putting a dent in Awwad’s pockets.
Awwad says “I closed you know from 2 o’ clock to 10 o’ clock in the morning. A lot of customers come in here and have nowhere to go. A lot of people work here.
The store is currently opened and Awwad hopes to completely fix the building when the weather warms up.
Nobody was hurt in the accident.
