ROCKFORD - The Winnebago County Coroner has released how a Rock Valley College professor and his two sons were killed over the weekend.
All three suffered gunshot wounds to the head in a suspected double murder-suicide. Police believe PS Ruckman, 58, shot and killed his two sons: Christopher Ruckman, 14, and John Ruckman, 12, before turning the gun on himself.
Both boys attended Rockford Christian. Memorials for them could be seen at their lockers and all around the school, including notes of remembrance. School leaders said they left a noticeable impact on the school.
"I'd just like to say that we do grieve the loss of these fine young men," said Superintendent Randy Taylor. "They were a presence in our school and I'm very thankful for the way everyone has responded to come together as a community and a family to help through this crisis."
Rockford Christian provided students grief counselors. Teachers are also being trained to assist with recovery as well.
Ruckman worked at RVC for 30 years. The shooting came as a shock and surprise to those who knew him.
"I'm disturbed," said RVC President Doug Jensen. "I met with a lot of my staff. There's a number of people that are shocked by this as well. We met over the weekend and we started to implement a response plan for crisis grief counseling."
