Downtown Rockford Becoming More Family Friendly

- ROCKFORD - Dozens climb aboard Trolley 36 in Downtown Rockford, a Stateline staple that runs every summer and had over 6 thousand riders last year alone.  “So far so good, we have had our first rides and they have all been packed”  said of the Rockford Park District.

The Rockford Park District organizes many activates downtown throughout the warmer months and some say they see a positive change. “Downtown definitely has more options for them, and most of the time the events are either really cheap or completely free”

The railway runs along the banks of the Rock River where the park district has yet another attraction, The Forest City Queen Riverboat “It is really fun, but sometimes you get splashed with water and it is fun to look at all of the monuments”

The boat carries up to 49 passengers and has been running since the 70's taking passengers for a historic ride through the rich history of Rockford “There has been a bad reputation for Downtown Rockford and I want people to know that there has been a lot of improvements.”

Although it can be a challenge to draw people into downtown Rockford, once they see what there is to offer, they come back for more. “It is fun to see that mix, and really just get people exposed to all we do have to offer in downtown Rockford. “It is a fun time and a great way to spend time with your family.”

The Rockford Park District kicked off trolley and riverboat season Saturday with a special event for families in the park, Eyewitness News talked with participants to see if the family friendly activities are creating a safer downtown Rockford.
