"This type of conduct is unacceptable and won't be tolerated" says IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman. "We appreciate the cooperation we have received from both schools and their support in sending the message that individuals who fight will lose the opportunity to represent their schools in IHSA events."
The IHSA did not publicize which five players are being suspended.
No one from East High School has received any punishment yet. But, sanctions will be announced in the near future.
ROCKFORD-The IHSA isn't expected to announce until Friday morning punishment for Jefferson's and East's basketball teams as a result of their brawl on Tuesday. But Eyewitness News has learned the following information from its sources.
First Jefferson will be allowed to play in the 4A Belvidere North Regional Championship game Friday night against Huntley. However five J-Hawks players will sit out that game serving suspensions for their part in the brawl. Also Jefferson head coach Todd Brannan will sit out the game under suspension. Brannan did nothing wrong Tuesday night, but as the head coach of a team involved in a brawl he also is being punished.
The IHSA takes a strong stance against fighting and wants to send a message to all schools, coaches and athletes.
Also the IHSA is expected to hold off a few more days or even weeks on announcing punishment against East. There are two reasons for that. One there is no urgency because East's season is over. Two the punishment against East is expected to be more severe than what is being handed down to Jefferson.
