Family Thankful After Attempted Child Abduction

Police have a suspect, but no arrests have been made

BELVIDERE - A Belvidere grandmother said a man nearly abducted her grandchildren right outside her home last Thursday. Now, police are praising the children for how they handled the situation.

Kim Dahl says she hears about abductions that happen nationwide and if it wasn't for the family's recent safety lessons, it could've been her grandkids.

"She was yelling, 'Nana, he's trying to get me!'" said Dahl.

She was in her home when one of her grandkids ran in yelling. Police say a white, Dodge Intrepid had pulled up in front of Dahl's home on Wildrose Drive and told Dahl's grandkids, who were in the front yard, to get in his car.

"It's scary to think that someone is just prowling in your neighborhood, taking your kids. It's a story you hear, [but] never happens to you, [then] it did."

A neighbor's camera was able to capture the Dodge on video. But, another neighbor says he's still shocked to hear this happened just down the street.

"Everybody has their children playing in the streets all the time," said Jeff Bourne.  "It was very surprising,"

Dahl she remembers feeling a rush of emotions that day. "The first reaction is anger because you're going to go and find them because they're trying to take your kids, you don't touch my kids. And then, when you sit and think about it, it's scary."

Belvidere Deputy Chief Shane Woody says it's important for parents to teach their children how to respond if they find themselves in similar situations. "One of the things that the children can do is be aware of their surroundings. If they are approached by an adult they don't know, don't talk to them and run to an adult they trust."

Officials haven't publicly released the suspect's identity.

"We're taking the information we currently have and just following up with that to identify if there's any potential risk to the community. But, it is still active and it is something still evolving."
