FREEPORT - The police badge and ID of former Freeport Police Officer Richard 'Dick' Cowan has been returned to his family after being turned in by an unidentified citizen. Police say Cowan was appointed to become Freeport's Police Chief in 1969 and died in 1972.
Thursday afternoon, the citizen returned his badge, ID card and other items, tell police that he just wanted to make sure the items were properly protected and respected.
Police returned to the items to his son, retired Freeport Police Officer Terry Cowan after posting photos of the items on Facebook. Those photos are posted below.
