BOONE COUNTY - A former Rockford Police Officer pleads guilty to driving drunk and causing an accident that left one paralyzed from the neck down.

Daniel Cruz, 39, pled guilty to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol.

In May 2012, Cruz was passing an SUV while in a no-passing zone near Beloit and Townhall roads.  Cruz then hit a pick-up truck and collided with the SUV.  Four people were in the SUV, one of them left paralyzed because of a spinal cord injury.

Cruz then started to walk away from the crash scene, but a firefighter stopped him.  Cruz's BAC level was .14.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 15.  Cruz faces a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.
