Frank Pobjecky Announces Candidacy for Winnebago County Sheriff

ROCKFORD- Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy Frank Pobjecky, surrounded by family and friends, announces he's running for Sheriff.

He wants to see more officers on the streets to fight crime. "That's the whole point of having boots on the ground is we have to deter that. We have to let the criminals know we are on the street that we are watching. We will protect the victims," said Pobjecky.

But if Pobjecky looks familiar, it's because of his role at the center of the 2011 Marie’s Pizza shooting. He was off-duty when four men attempted to rob the restaurant.

Pobjecky shot and killed Michael Sago, 16, while struggling over a gun. The three other men face a slew of charges including murder. One of them has already been sentenced.

"With the Marie’s Pizza incident that does not define who I am as a person. My life experiences, you know with serving for our armed forces and the community as a Deputy Sheriff, that's who I am as a person," said Pobjecky.

And despite only being 31 years old he says his military experience such as two combat tours in Iraq make him qualified to be Winnebago County Sheriff.

Winnebago County Board member John Sweeney supports Pobjecky saying he's someone he could work with if elected.

"We’ve had a lot of discussions and meetings about with resources being tight how we want to allocate those resources and public safety. This department and things related to it are our top priority," said Sweeney.

Pobjecky will be running on the Republican ticket against Gary Caruana in the 2014 election.
