FREEPORT - A bulldozer knocked down what remained of the old Ioco gas station on Galena Avenue Wednesday morning.  The structure had been collecting dust and sitting vacant for over ten years.  Vandals even tagged it with graffiti.

Today's demolition is part of an ongoing project to tear down abandoned properties in the Pretzel City.

Mayor Jim Gitz says it's a vital step to enhancing the city's image.  "It's important that we not let these eyesores sit here, unattended to, as an attractive nuisance, as an invitation to crime and as a statement that our city doesn't care" said Gitz.  "[Those] are negative messages, none of which are true."

Freeport has already demolished nearly 30 buildings within the past year.
