Two Freeport families are homeless after a pair of early morning house fires. One home in the 1000 block of South Chicago was fully engulfed when crews arrived on scene about 6:30. Firefighters say they saw black smoke coming out of the back of the house.

The cold played a role in fighting this fire as crews had to deal with frozen equipment.

The other fire happened about 2:30 A.M. in the 600 block of West Galena Avenue. No injuries were reported in either fire. The Red Cross is now assisting eight adults and three children forced out of their homes.
