ROCKFORD -- A rare sight in Rockford today-- groundbreaking on a new fire station. The gold shovels hitting dirt on the future site of firestation number 3. It's been 25 years since a new station was built in Rockford, and officials say the southwest side of town is a very strategic location for the new firehouse. They say response times should be vastly improved.

"By being located further south and west of our current location we'll have better access to south main, north and south and across the river which is going to improve our response times for E.M.S. And fire calls," said Fire Chief Derek Bergsten.

The new station should be operational by may of next year.
