ROCKFORD - Community leaders gathered at the Winnebago County Courthouse on Thursday in a show of solidarity for victims of child abuse across the area and the country.
It was the 16th annual "Hands Around the Courthouse" event. It's in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Event supporters say it's a great opportunity to bring the issue to the forefront, and to share resources and solutions with the community.
"There's a lot we can do to help these particular agencies deal with those children that need our help," said children's advocate Judge Rosemary Collins of the 17th Judicial Circuit Court. "Children's Safe Harbor, Remedies - the list goes on and on - CASA; those agencies work with children all the time to help make their interactions with their parents, or adult figures in their life, safe and supportive."
In Winnebago County in 2015, more than 1,500 children were indicated as being abused or neglected.
