I-Pass Customers Without Transponders Could Soon Face Penalty

The Illinois Tollway is looking to crack down on cars without transponders.

WTVO/WQRF - Daily, as drivers make their commute along the I-90 interstate between Rockford and Chicago, they use an I-Pass transponder to automatically pay the toll charge at the Belvidere-Genoa toll plaza.

The Illinois Tollway Authority is looking to crack down on registered I-Pass customers who drive without their transponder in the car. Beginning sometime next year, if a motorist drives through a plaza without one, they'll pay the full price of the toll.

"It's going to be hard on people," said Algonquin resident Brian Oye.

The Tollway Authority says nearly one billion cars pass through a toll plaza every year. For those with a transponder, it costs eight cents for the tollway to verify that they're actually a customer.

But, for customers who don't use their transponder, the tollway says the cost nearly triples, as they must employ other technology to match a car to its driver.

Illinois Tollway leaders say the increased fees will save them money.

"I don't know if it's going to save them money or not," Oye added. "It's a good idea if it does, but who knows?"

The Tollway Authority does say one transponder can be used for several different cars. Currently, four million people have an I-Pass account, and there are six million transponders being used within the state.
